[EN] Michel Portal, born in 1935 in Bayonne, is one of the major figures of European jazz, as well as a multifaceted musician: clarinetist, saxophonist, bandoneon player, and composer. Trained at the Paris Conservatory, he has established himself both in the classical and contemporary repertoire and in the fields of jazz and free improvisation, alongside figures such as Boulez, Stockhausen, and Berio.
A pioneer of free jazz in France, Michel Portal took part in the major aesthetic breakthroughs of the 1960s and 1970s, notably with François Tusques, and later with the Michel Portal Unit, an ensemble open to exchanges between European and American musicians centered on collective improvisation. His playing, grounded in freedom, sonic exploration, and constant inventiveness, has left a lasting mark on the European scene.
The album Alors!!!, recorded in 1970 and originally released on Futura, is a striking example: alongside John Surman, Barre Phillips, Stu Martin, and Jean-Pierre Drouet, Portal delivers an incandescent free jazz performance, both intense and adventurous, while also opening onto more suspended, atmospheric passages. Reissued by Futura Marge, the record brings back into focus a key moment in his trajectory, where collective energy and formal audacity fully converge.

[FR] Michel Portal né en 1935 à Bayonne, est l’une des figures majeures du jazz européen, mais aussi un musicien aux multiples visages : clarinettiste, saxophoniste, bandonéoniste et compositeur. Formé au Conservatoire de Paris, il s’est imposé aussi bien dans le répertoire classique et contemporain que dans le champ du jazz et de l’improvisation libre, aux côtés de figures comme Boulez, Stockhausen ou Berio.
Pionnier du free jazz en France, Michel Portal a participé aux grandes ruptures esthétiques des années 1960 et 1970, notamment avec François Tusques, puis avec le Michel Portal Unit, formation ouverte à l’échange entre musiciens européens et américains autour de l’improvisation collective. Son jeu, fondé sur la liberté, la recherche sonore et une inventivité constante, a durablement marqué la scène européenne.
L’album Alors!!!, enregistré en 1970 et publié à l’origine sur Futura, en est une illustration saisissante : aux côtés de John Surman, Barre Phillips, Stu Martin et Jean-Pierre Drouet, Portal y déploie un free jazz incandescent, à la fois nerveux, aventureux et ouvert sur des climats plus suspendus.
